Cleaning Data with OpenRefine

Cleaning Data with OpenRefine In-Person / Online

OpenRefine is a powerful and free tool for analyzing, cleaning, and structuring tabular data. It also keeps track of the changes made step-by-step so users can undo or re-apply them on a different data set. As such, it allows users to share reproducible data transformations. In this workshop, we’ll cover:

  • What “messy” data is, and how to “clean” it.
  • Opening and exploring a dataset in OpenRefine.
  • Using OpenRefine’s transformations to clean data.
  • Exporting the Operation History log of your transformations.

No coding experience needed. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops to follow along and get hands-on experience with OpenRefine. To install OpenRefine ahead of time, visit the OpenRefine Download page: https://openrefine.org/download.
